Figures prepared by the Postal Department at the instance of Sir Josopli Ward show that ten years ago the number of accounts open at Uie Post Office Saving's Bank was 137,683, and at the end of 1905 the number was 276,066. This shows that almost half the adult population had accounts in December last at the bank. The do. posits in 1895 numbered,2l7,393, last year 500,112, an increase of 13419 per cent. The sum of £2,704,506 w#s de« posited in 1895, and in 1905 the dc« posits were £6,625,714, an increase of 137'10 per cent. The amount of with» drawals in the two years was £2,369, 3.13 and £5,981,184 respectively, and the balance to credit of depositors* at the end of each respective year wa* £3,395,513 and £'8,6(12,093.
