Where Tombs are Rented Yearly. New Orleans is probably the only American oily where tombs are let on a yearly rental, Mid the dead inmates are evicted when payment falls into arrears. Owing to the marshy nature of the soil it is impracticable to dig graves, and the deid are therefore entombed in a curious manner. Each cemetery consists of a number of huge walls, i* which are a series of recessos like large pigeon-holes. The ooffins are placed in these recesses whioh are then sealed up.

Euh coffin Is entitled to occupy one of these tombs free for a certain time; but as accommodation is limited, a yearly rental is obarged when this term elapses. Should tbis rent (all in arrears, the coffin is removed and buried in a common grave in anothei part of the cemetery.
