COMMERCIAL.
Messrs Bcwlcy and Griffiths, dairy produce exporters, New Plymouth, are 11 receipt of the following market rcmi'l [rom (heir London principals, Messr< Mills and Sparrow, dated J anu-1 ii'v I'itli, r.i.l.i:—
l!i! lor. There has been rather a lull in the trade this week, after four or live weeks' jlirm advaucing markets oa all descriptions. There is no doubt that the prices for some descriptions of butter were advanced a littie too smartly, p.irlijuljrly in the ease of French and Danish, which were both abnormally dear when compared with other sorts, especially colonial. The result lias been that French and Danisli descriptions have had a very poor demand, and have been forced to put their prices back, but they arc still relatively dear. This putting back of prices has naturally had the result of causing buyers of all descriptions to hold off, with the idea that the whole position will be weakened, but it is very doubtful if this will come about. The quantity of all kinds of butters coming to (ireat Britain does not show that relative increase which is necessary to supply the extra consumption year by year, an 1 the market must keep on a higher basis than previous years for some time to come. We may have another week of dull trade, but when buyers lind that the colonial agents are holding lirm, tlicy will have to come on again, and we expect soon to report firm markets. We understand that the efforts that were made last Meek to advance the retail prices have not yet been consummated, which has also had the effect of rather (lamping the ardour of the retail buyer. Danish.—The market for this description has been dull, as prices were forced too high, the consequence being that the orders were slackened in Denmark, and a reduction was made vesterday of :1 kroncrs (:!s Oil) this slackening, of the demand on Danish was to a large exlent caused by increased orders being given for New Zealand and Australian.
French.—This description, especially frcsh rolls, was exceedingly dear, 2nd, 3rd and Ith qualities showing bad value. The consequence has been a reduction of lit per lb. Fresh rolls are now quoted at Ms fid, 13s. Gil, 12s (id, and 12s per dozen pounds. Baskets apd iirkins arc also down about Id per lb.
Kussiaii.—Supplies coi)tinuu small, as is usual at this season ol the year, and prices remain firm. Australian.—ln sympathy with other descriptions, the demand has been quiet ibis week, but there is no doubt that buyers will have to conic ou again shortly, ami wc look for steady prices, There is still a little too much unsalted arriving, and care has to bo taken in marketing it, so that the values generally are nut dragged down. There is little more uudcrpriccd offering, as some of the butters arriving this week show slight sign:- of hot weather.
New Zealand.—The butters that arrived per s.s. Kuapchu have turned out in line order. Top price generally is now llSs, and though the trade is a little quiet at this price, agents are holding firm. AVe do not anticipate any ililliculty in clearing right out before next vessel arrives.
Cheese.—Market has been steady throughout the week, wiih .i shade less business doing. The posiii n, however, seems sound, with very little prospect of lower priees.
