K MacDiarmid (executor wrote :—" I thank you for suggesting that the £SOO from (ho estate of tlu late Mrs Small should go towards add ing a children's ward (to be called the "Small Ward") to the Hospital. I sent a copy of one of the local papers ; containing tlio report of your last i meeting to each of the near relatives ol h the late Borough Councillor Small, and I am in receipt of the following lei lei 1 from one of them:—'My mothci ' wishes me (o acknowledge the receipt i ot the newspaper so kindly sent to her by you. We all think the suggestion —a children's ward, a very necessary part of every hospital—a most happy one. We hope to hear of its existence at New Plymouth at no very distant date.' " It was decided to acknowledge the : letter, and a resolution was carried recommending that the ward be built when a new hospital is erected, and that it be known as the " Small Ward," ; to perpetuate the name of the generous donor. riIOISATIONEIIS. The names of Miss Gladys Hutchcn, of the Mission House, Karatonga, and Miss Elizabeth Annie Wilson, of Petone, were placed on the outside list of probationers. OLD PEOPI.Ii's lIOMK. Mr A. E. Farrar, manager, reported that one man and one woman were admitted to the home during the month. There were now I<l inmates—3o men and eight women. There was one departure for the month. The general health of the inmates was as satisfactory as could be expected, and discipline good. Mr Farrar thanked the Board for the increase of salary to himself and wife. VISIT OK IXSI'UCTIOX. The Chairman reported that Mrs Grace Neil, Assistant Inspector of Hospitals and Charitable Aid Instit :ions, had visited the Hospital and home on February Ist, and expressed herself as being well pleased with the management of the institutions. Mrs Neil had inspected the children under the Board's control at Marrctt's farm, and was well pleased with the surroundings, complimenting Miss Ovcrdeu, who had charge of the juveniles, on their healthy condition and clean appearance. There were 13 of (lie Board's young dependents present on the occasion. OI'N Kit AL. The Secretary reported a credit balance of £<l(so 7s 7tl. The Secretary was instructed to sue defaulters for outstanding accounts. Mr Cock pointed out several items on the accounts for supplies indicated extr.ivagancc, He was in no way opposed to " full and plenty," but thought in the items referred to reasonable economy had not been shown.— The matter was deferred till the after- ■ noon visit of members to the hospital. An application from Mr G. G. j Hughes, of Auckland, for a vacancy as attend ml wi ; received. There is no v.ici'i ,- y at present. j The eleetrie light installation at the nurses' home and annexe being complete, the light is now to be used.
