TENNIS TOURNAMENT.
THE THIRD DAY. Perfect weather prevailed for the continuation of the Taranaki Tennis •tournament on Saturday. The courts (luring the afternoon were crowded \wth spectators. Some splendid play was witnessed in several of the semi-finals and finals, Ihe play-off between L islier and Wallace for the Op 3 n Championship prouding probably the best game ever witnessed in New Ply. mouth. Fisher at one stage seemed to have the game won, but appeared to become a trifle careless, taking hazardous risks. Wallace played a capital uphill game, and richly earned his victory. The Ladies' Championship Singles was won, as was anticipated, bv Miss Powdrell, but Mrs Payne was o M.V Un " or - u P- Mlss Powdrell an.: Payne had a somewhat easy win in tno Championship Doubles, and in u , r med Champion Doubles Miss Powdrell and C. J. Dickie won with something to spare. In the Handicap Singles Miss Powdrell had he hardest game to win, Mrs Payne playmg very consistently right ' wa ' s f ° ulld "possible to get all the games off on Saturday, and a number of finals will consequently be played this morning if the weather permits. The most interesting of these games should be jetwecn Dickie and Wallace for the „ aranaki Championship, and betwe, , Fisher and Dickie in tho Handicap Singles. There are still two games in the Combined Handicap Doubles and these will be started at nine o'clock this morning. A most enjoyable dance was held in the Brougham-street Hall on Saturday right, at which the visiting players were entertained. There was a very good attendance. During the evening the prizes won were presented to the winners by Mrs Fitzhorbert, Dr. Home doing the necessary speechifying. Mr F. M B. Fisher, M.H.R., made a happy speech replying on behalf of the visitors. The results on Saturday were as follows: MEN' S CHAMPIONSHIP SINGLES. Third round: Wallace got a bye from Nicholson. Final: Wallace beat Fisher, 8-6, 1-6, 7-5, 0-6, 7-5. This was a splendid game to watch. taranaki.singles championship. C. J. Diekie anil A. G. Wallace play oft for the final to-day. Third rouud : Mrs Payuc beat Miss Brewster, 6-1), 6-2. Final: Miss Powdrell beat Mrs Payne, 6-1, 6-2. LADIES CHAMPIONSHIP DOUBLES. Second round: Misses E. and A. Dickie beat Miss Thomson and Miss Miss MacDiarmid, 6-3,| li- t. Final: Mrs Payno and Miss Powdrell beat Misses E. and A. Dickie, 6-0, 6-0. COMBINED CIiiXIHONSIIir DOUBLr . Final: Miss Powdrell and C. J. J. Dickie beat Mrs Corrigan and F. M. B. Fisher, 6-0, 6-2, men's handicap singles. Fourth round: F. M, B. Fisher (owe 20) boat C. H. Weston (3)) 80-74, v Final: Fisher and Dickie play off at 10.30 this morning. MENS HANDICAP DOUIJI.ES. Final: J. J. Weir and 3?. G. Hume (25), beat W. C. Weston and J. W Wilson (30), 60-57. Ladies' Handicap Singles Third rouud (continued): Mrs Pa\ ie beat Mis* Thomson, 'ls-38. Fourth round (continued): Mrs Payne beat Mrs Johns, 15-37. Final: Miss Powdrell beat Mrs Payne, 65-62. Ladies Handicap Doi'blks, Miss Taylor and Miss Simpwu heat Miss Reid and Miss Brewster, Combined Handicap Doubles. Second round (continued): Mrs Corrigan and Fisher beat Mrs Pa} no and Brown 65-63; Miss E. Dickie and Wallace beat Miss Dorrett and Wybournc, 65-37; iJiss Powdrell and Nicholson beat Miss Payne and Dr. Fookes, 75-68. Third round: Miss Powdrell and Nicholson beat Miss E. Dickie anil Wallace. Mrs Corrigan and Fisher meet Miss Thomson and Balharry this morning at 9 o clook, the winners plajing off | with Miss Powdrell and Nicholson in the final.
