Frank Heriot Laing was charged at tho Police Court to-day with having contracted a number of debts with various Auckland business firms, while still being an undischarged bankrupt. and also with having contributed to his bankruptcy by rash and hazardous speculation and gambling. The Official Assignee said he had examined accused books, and found that his unsecured liabilities were £100!), there being £135 outstanding for creditors who had not proved so far. It was a different thing to assert the value of assets, but he was inclined to put them down as under £2O. His earnings appeared to have been in the gross about £llsO since June last, and his capital at the start was, on his statement (although it did not appear on the books) £200.The deficiency amounted to £1)31, and the total amount for which he had to account was £2281. By way of business, travelling expenses, etc, he accounted vaguely for.£sßo. He further accounted, for private and household expenses, for £3OB, leaving £1321 unaccounted for. A written confession of offences made by accused was put in, and he pleaded guilty. Accused was committed to the Supreme Court for sentence.
