LAWN TENNIS.
The seventh annual tournament of the Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association opens this morning on the local courts, and will be continued on Friday and Saturday. The entries arc very large, and include a number of competitors of colonial repute. The Men's Championship especially presents a very open appearance. On present form Miss Powdrell should account for tho Ladies' Championship. Piay commences each morning at 9.30, and players arc requested to be. ready to go on when called. Afternoon tea will be dispensed by the ladies' committee, The whole of tho arrangements arc very complete, and the courts should bo the object of considerable patronage during the next three days. Play commences with tho Taranaki Men's Singles, the opening games being between Nicholson and Fookcs, Griffiths and Smith, and Fitzhcrbcrt and Wallace.
Competitors will he given passes at the gates this morning. In addition to the large number of competitors who were already in town, the following arrived by the mail train on Wednesday night Misses Dickie (2), Messrs. A. 6. Wallace, C. J. Dickie and jVI. S. Wybourne (Waverlcy); F. N. Fussell and Miss Fussell (Stratford); N. Caplen, Misses Koch and Bair:l (liawera); Mesditnies Pcarce and I'ayne, Misses l'owdrell, Payne and Derrett (I'atea); Me.sdames Corrigau and Edmunds (Mauaia); P. M. B. Fisher and H. Brown (Wellinuton).
