BOOKMAKERS PROSECUTED.
VEUDICT OF NOT GUILTY. I'KIl I'UKSS ASSOCIATION. CiiitisTciirncii, February 13. Matthew Barnetl and Peter Grant were indicted at the Supreme Court this morning before Mr Justice Dcnuislon for '• that they did on December 27th, 1 litis, bring occupiers of an office iu Hereford street, keep and use it for the purpose of belling with persons resorting thereto,"
The office was raided by tho police on January Ist and a large quantity 0* papers relating to betting transactions seized. &
A plain-clothes constable also succeeded in making a bet with Baruett, though on another occasion he was refused by both. Accuseds' defence was that it was perfectly legal for a man to carry on the business of bookmaker and make bets and record transactions, provided he did not make bets .with persons resorting to the oflice, or give totalisator odds. The documents seized might all refer to transactions made by telephone, telegraph, or letter,.ami were therefore legal. A verdict of "not guilty " was returned.
