A youth named Wilfred Haunan, aged sixteen, who was on his way from Greymouth to Wellington, and was -~- spending a day or two here, went to bnlhe in the Maitai river this evening ""i with some other boys. Being unable *" to swim, he walked to the top end of a deeper hole to cross the river, bat got out of his depth and sank. He was not missed for a few minutes. When the boys searched and brought him out, efforts at resuscitation wore mado for a long time, also by I)rs. Andrews and Lucas, [but were unavailing. An inquest is to be held to-morrow. Deceased was the son of a well-known solicitor. Waiimwa, February 13. George Winlovc, aged -k) years, a re. / sideut of AVaipawa, dropped dead this $ morning. He had been ailing somo lime.
l'l'NEUix, February It. Fredorick Vernon, aged two years and six mouths, died from strychnine poison, which the child found in a neighbor's house.
