KAFFIR DISTURBANCES.
MURDERERS FLEE TO THE BUSH. FEARS OF THE WISING SPREADING. IMPERIAL TROOPS DESPATCHED. Received 12/10.58 p.m. CiriiTowN, February 10. The murderers in the Richmond district are Christianised Kaffirs, be. longing to the Modi's tribe. They have abandoned their kraals and fled to the bush, near the source of the Umkomas River, and it will bo difficult to bring thorn to justice. Three-hundred nud fifty carbineers and a battery of field artillery have gone to tho scene of the disturbance. The attitude of the natives is threatening, aud small bodies of troops have been distributed through tho country, and will possibly check their movements, but it is considered that more drastic measures arc advisable. The trouble is connected almost equally with the ordinary hut tax and the now poll tax. The only Imperial troops in Natal arc 200, belonging to a garrison rcgi. incut stationed at Maritzburg. It is thought that Imperial troops ought to strengthen the garrisou towns and villages.
