The unlives near Richmond, Natal, having iimioimeed their refusal to pay poll tax, two anucd unlives were arrested, bill forty armed Zulus ambushed the party of poliee. The ringleadc" contemptuously struck Inspector Hunt on the face with the Hat of an assegai Hunt shot him dead and a melee ensued.
The Inspector and a trooper were killed, and the troopers compelled to retire, one riding miles with an assegai in his back.
Martial law has been proclaimed. Carbineers and artillery are mobilising, and the volunteers have been sum moned.
The Transvaal authorities are guarding the Swaziland borders owing to the Richmond outbreak.
