BUSH FIRES IN WESTLAND.

Bush lires in t lie vicinity of the Statu Coal Mine und at Bnmner have given the residents a considerable nmonnt of anxiety during the past three or lour days. Owing to the spell of dry weather the hush is very inllam. mable. So far no great damage is reported, hut; owing to iho danger from wind-borne sparks, people at Dimollie and liunanga township at the Slate Mine, have hail 1" keep a keen look-out (o prevent (heir houses catching lire, and many houses " have uarrowlv escaped destruction. In some cases valuable property would have ( lieen destroyed but for prompt action in keeping the lires within bounds. At, Dunollie some chains of wooden tramway, from the bush to a sawmill near the State Mine, was destroyed, and for a time the sawmill was in danger of destruction. At Brunuer the resident hud u hard light to keep the fires from spreading to the houses, and at one period it was seriously contemplated asking for the services of the Greymoulh lire brigade to assist in the work.
Some beautiful bush on the old Marsden-road, recently inspected by the Scenery Preservation 'Joiumissioner, is on lire and it is feared that unless the wind moderates much damage will be done.
Bush lire's are also reported ill dif, fcrent points along the coast bi-Lvvceii Greyniouth mid Weslporl.
