THE BUTTER MARKET.

TO THE EDITOR. Sin. —Having noticed several letters bearing upon the sudden fall of prices for our staple product, may I trespass upon your valuable columns in order t > point out that this is no rare occurrence!" When in London some fifteen years since, I had large consignments of butter sent to me for sale. One of these arrived in the month of February, w hen the prices suddenly receded, owing principally to mild weather and large ipiantitics arriving. Having obtained fair rates for some I had sold, I began to fear that low prices would have to be taken for the shipment in hand and those to follow. I tried several agents, and asked them to take over my butter for sale, as I did not deem it wise to hold in face of what appeared a sudden collapse. My offer was declined by some of the leading agents in Snow Hill and Smithtiehl market. One remarked that the bottom of the butter trade had fallen out for the season. I held on, and it was well that T did. Severe weather set in, snow aud sharp frosts continued, which had a hardening effect upou prices, and when 1 left Loudou in the month of April prices for New Zealand butter ruled at 112s per ew t. 'Tis true the spring was a late one; in fact, it had been a very severe whiter, and prices had ruled high for all classes of butter. I have sent these few lines for the purpose of allaying the fears and alarm that have been created by the recent cables.—l am, etc., John My.nott.
