SEND OFF TO SFAUIT. BKATTIH

At the Police Station, Xe<v Plymouth, on I'ridav evening, Sergeant Beattie, who was recently promoted in rank, and transferred from W'aitara to Wellington, was tendered a scnd-o!V by the district force. Sergeant Haddrcll presiding, and besides all the men not on night duty, police otlicers were present I'i'oin oui stations The usual loyal toasts having been honored, the Sergeant, on behalf of the members of the torce in the district, presented to Sergeant Beattie on behalf of Mrs Beattie. a suitably inscribed travelling portmanteau. Sergeant Haddrcll made a most Haltering speech, eulogising Sergeant Bealtic as a conscientious and popular odieor. Speeches were also made by Detective Boddani (who joined the police force on the same day as Sergeant Beattie in 1887) and all the otlicers present. Sergeant Beattie .suitably responded, and thanked the men for their gift on behalf of his wife. A presentation from the prison department. represented by Messrs Downs and O'Grady, was also made to Mrs Beattie in the form of a honeysuckle deck chair. A suitable response was 'made. The rest of the evening, until midnight, was spent in harmony, assisted in no inconsiderable extent by Messrs Frank and Bert Cornwall Several of (lie men also contributed choice items.
