ATTEMPT TO DERAIL A TRAIN.

BARS OF METAL ACROSS RAILS. MUI PIIKSS ASSOCIATION. LvviiKt'Aiiiiiu,, February S. A deliberate attempt was made to derail the Southland express between Kaihiku ami Waiwcra hist night, bars oi iron being laid across tho metals, also a mile post some little distance away being lashed with wire and secured to the wedges driven into sleepers. The driver, named Moloney, felt the engine puss over nil obstruction and pulled up sharp. No damage was done and the train proceeded after the wire and broken post were taken from the tender gear of the engine. The railway at the place runs through a Hut. It is stated that two horsemen galloped away just before the train passed, but the police are inclined to think the act to be the work ot boys. The method of fixing the obstruction, however, indicates older heads and some experience.
