The Department of Industries and Commerce has received I lie follow ing report 011 llu' lull lit ami cheese market from the Produce Commissioner. London, dated 22nd ultimo: —The bnttor ex i'aparoa was nil delivered in good eondilion. It Wiis carried in Mo. )! Tween-decks and lower hold. I visited the vessel during discharge, acrompanied liv Mr (Iwillini, of tlie Klthain Dairy factory. who is on a visit to tliis country. With Mr (Iwilhm, who is butter-maker at tlie factory liientioiied, I made a eavelnl examination of the various lots. As 1 have on several occasions pointed oui, however, the hutlev on landing is in a frozen condition, and it was impossible to detect any faults while it was in this stale. Mo far as could be judged, the quality of al' tested was satisfactory. On enquiry made since of the merchants handling the I'aparoa ship neuis. I have received no complaints from them. The cheese was also delivered ill excellent condition, I was pleased to note from the records shown me in the refrigerating log that the temperature had been maintained some live degrees higher than customary in former seasons. Judging from the result of this and other shipments of cheese made under similar conditions last year, I am satistied that the instructions given I'nr the temperatures to be raised live degrees is an improvement, and I am pleased to note that it has been embodied in the new agreement' made between the National I'airy Association and the shipping companies. In the shipment of cheese 1 noticed a number of cases from the Lowgarth Dairy Factory containing clieese nnule on the Caerphilly style. lam making inquiry concerning these, and will probably be able to give some information about them by next mail. The cheese market continues good. Prices are high, tils being about the average realised for the I'aparoa shipment of New Zealand cheese. Opinions have for some tiiiu differed as to whether high price.* would continue. It has been rumoured that considerable storks are held In one or two tirins who have been for.'ilij. the market up, tint as to the truth o this I. cannot determine. AI the prcs cut moment a more hopeful fccliiif that present prices will continue is liic with than existed some weeks ago. The fact that prices are so high jus
prior lo Christinas is .some indicali tluil they will last, as usually Ibis ti. of the year is not a good one for I cheese, trade. ,S> far the arrivals both butter and cheese have been clii iy disposal uf ill the Smith of Kligla and London. The otillooK for In butter and cheese may be regarded I very encouraging.
