FARM AND DAIRY.
Fanners in the southern cud of the province have found it necessary in some instanc's to put the binders into their grain crops, owing to the presence of caterpillars ill them. This means thai the affected crops are being cut before the grain is ready. ' Although the season has been an excellent one for growth, the oat crops I of Taranaki have not done too well, The reason for this i-: not known. The crops are not ouly light in grain yield, but the stalks also are inferior and diminutive. The barley crops are showing up better, and some heavy yields are expected. Never before have tbur crops of turnips been growu than 111 >se at present coming on for wilier feeling. A settler of thirty wars' standing informed the present scribe that ex-elleui turnips had been grown this sea-on without the aid of artificial manures, and in substantiation of the statement pointed to a 10-acre pint, which was more forward than crops in the same locality at a period two mouths later last season. This winter feeding, iu addition to the liny ami ensilage crops that have b.Tii harvested, points to a good tune for the dairy herds during 1 the winter.

The recent showers have freshened up tilings wonderltilly, and many of (lie better farms present a luxuriant carpet of these blooms. The blossoms, too, are very large and line in quality, and the amount of seed from them thai will be scattered over the land augurs well fur pastures ol clover next year. From all around rejurls are heard of the great yields of milk from the dairy herds. One farmer in the Eltham district has about topped the i record. He claims to luve taken iiDs from each cow during December. MEItIT REWARDED 11Y COURT OK JI'STICK.
