FEDEIiAL GOVERMENT IN. TENTIONS. lleceived 1, 12.39 a.m. Mklbopexs, January 31 Mr Deakin, at the Exhibition luncheon to-day, referred to the necessity for increased immigration to develop the country. He said that tho Commonwealth and the States in this matter must ho idosely aud intimately associated if the States would make the ] ttu d easily available to satisfy the inflow of im. migrants. The Federal Government «as prepared to submit a Bill next session to ask Parliament for a vote for liberal subsidies to advertise Australia, and to bring out suitable immigrants at. cheap |fares, thus competing with Canada. The Government was also preparing a scheme of bounties to cucourage new products, and the States would thus be inspirited to advance to Hip conquest of the great interior which at present was unoccupied. It was a great national question. He made the States a practical offer, hoping it would lead to practical business
