A representative gathering of local footballers and sporting acquaintances assembled together in the Pantei-lini-non rooms, King-street, on (Saturday evening, for the purpose of bidding farewell tn Mr Percy Johnston, the popular cross-country rider and trainer, on tin- occasion of his leaving Taranaki for Hnwke's Bay, whore he is taking up the position as trainer for Mr (I. I>. Donnelly. Mr J. Oliver was voted to the chair. and in the course of his remarks referred to Mr P. Johnson's career as a footballer, notably in connection with the Tukapa Club, lie having been associated with the Tukapas from their formation, and was an active playing member for some eight seasons. He had much pleasure, on behalf of the footballers, in presenting a cheque, to lie handed to Mrs Johnston, as a token of appreciation of the services rendered to football by her husband in the past. ai;d wished Mr and Mrs Johnson t.'\\>vy 'success and prosperity in their new ! sphere. I Mr J. Cody then presented Mr Johnson with a handsome portmanteau, suitably engraved, as a slight momento from liis numerous sporting friend* and admirers. Mr Cody said that Ml' Johnson's achievemei ts on the turf, both as rider and trainer,] placed him in the highest flight in his profession, in Australasia at anyrate, if not ill the world. In giving some particulars of Mr Johnson's career. Mr Cody said he won hi- lirst Steeplechase at Takapuns, in INS'.i. prior to which he. was very I su cessful iu flat events. Jle held th e
unique record of having ridden nine Grand National winners, mid had the distinction of having also trained live of these winners. His record for Steeplechases included the Hawke's Bay, Wellington (thrice), Egiuont (four times), Beaufort (four times), Wanganui and also fully fifty smaller Steeplechase anil Hurdle events j a record that would take a power of beating. Mr Cody closed his remarks by asking those present to jom with him in toasting Mr Johnson and wishing him success, long life, and prosperity in his new responsibility.
Mr Johnson, in rcplv, stated it was with regret ho was leaving the district, but he thanked those present for their kind wishes and presents lo Mrs Johnson and himself. He hoped lo be able to pay an occasional visit to Taranaki, and perhaps bring a winner with him.
Numerous complimentary speeches were made during ilic course of I lie evening by v. rious speakers; songs, te. also being contributed by Messrs. W. Perrv, J. Oliver, J. Cody, If. Boswell, K. Webster, H. Edwards, L. Russell, F. Stohr, B. Stanley, and J. MontiKore. Mr G. Garry presided at the piano. A very enjoyable gathering dispersed before midnight.
