BAND CONTEST.
CONCLUDING PROCEEDINGS. SOLO COMPETITIONS. (From our Special Reporter.) Ituviiiu, 8 p.m. This afternoon the E Plat cornet solo and B Flat baritone solo competitions were decided, mid resulted as follows:--K PLAT COUXK'T. J, J. McGrath (Wooluon) ill! points, I ; .1. Trussell (Wunganui) i) 5, 1 ; S. Tombs (Pabncrston North) ill, 3 ; W. Xicholls (Stratford) III); K. Mara (South Canterbury Battalion) 8:!. JUDGE'S CRITICISM. No. I player -S. Tombs •■ T.inrredi." —A sweet-toned soprano solo, fairly well played. Rather too many blemishes, but n bit of pleasing work. Became mixed in some of the difficult passages.
No. 2 player—K. Mara, "Fantasie Varic" (Merck).—A moderate performance, only wants general study. No. 3 player—McGrath " Taucredi." An excellent rendering. My shorthand notes record a few flaws. Has good understanding of the subject. Toneful and tuneful, and general ; manipulation correct. A careful and judicious instrumentalist.
No. i player—Trussell, "Tanercdi." —Another fine performance, which was marred in the latter half by faulty play of the accompanist. Tlie solo is a very difficult one and unless the performer is well supported by the accompanist a good rendering becomes impossible. This player has a good tone and style. The concluding bars were somewhat weak and the triple touguiug was not always clean. No. 5 player—Nicholls, " Taucredi." —Very pleasing in many respects. Triple tonguing exceedingly weak. The player wants to study this branch of tongue manipulation. Has a great many good points.
D FLAT BAHITOXES. The Judge says llii" bnriloiio was tlio weakest section of the eoutest and nowhere near last year's play. Sonic of the parts were good hut some were had. Results:—G. Jensen (Wanganm) 91 points, 1; S. Barton (Woolslnn) SSI, 2 j T. DepholT, (South Canlerhury Battalion) SIS, 3; li. Tiemey, (Unahine Battalion) 85, •!•; A. E. Fieldga ucs, (Auckland Regimental) Hi), 5.
JUDGE'S CUITICISM. No. 1 player—Jensen, " Birds of the Thurgett Wood " (Hock).—For a perfect rendering of this excellent solo, temperamental playing is required. This feature was not present to the extent desired, though the performance generally speaking was good. Some of the high notes and most of the variations were cleanly done. Not always good in intonation. Xo. 2 playei—Barton. •• Linda da Chamomiix " (Dongctti). A very fair performance. Not the diiliculties to contend with which the previous player had. There were several blemishes. Has good tone, hut instrument became very sharp as playing proceeded. Some rims slightlv mixed. No. 3 pkyer-J. Deihoff, "My Pretty Jane ' (Harlinan). Rather 100 tame in style.—Solo wants a lot ol brightening. Tone foggy at times. Is a very fair executant. No Xo. 'I player—Fullgames, "The Harp that once through Pari* Hall " (Harman). This solo wants more general study. Tripple tonguing mil mastered at all. lias fair tone for hand work.
No. 5 player—Tierney " Tucellar Cool." Rather too many unfortunate breaks on high notes. Hid some good work.

Wanganui, " Figelio." A mosl artistic and musical rendering of this classical quartette. The horn made ouc or two slips. Party blended excellently and kept together in a mosl commendable manner. Woolston, " Leo Huguenots." A few slips noticeable and the horn made a bad beginning. Could have stood a little more united power in the F.F. passage. On the whole a very good performance.
