Yet, on January Nth, lie (Mr Berry) received a notice dated January Ist, ordering him to connect these premises with the Borough drains within 30 days, yet more than JO premises were being drained into the river much nearer to the centre of the town, lie asked the reason for being singled out in this manner, lie was paying'ills per annum for the water consumed, which was the same as if connected to the drains, so that the Borough was not losing revenue. Further, his total rates amounted to £35 per annum. He had intended installing the electric light at both places, but if the Council insisted on the drain connection, he would have to abandon the idea. An inspection, however, had been made, and it was now suggested that the drain be taken down ltobe street. This would necessitate a cutting or tunnelling, owing to the levels in the street, but at the same time it would pick up the drainage from a portion of the town where it was badly needed, The Department asked whcth"i' the Council would be willing to pay the dilVerence in cost between the two routes. The sum so expended would fully recompense the Council and the drainage would be of great benefit to the residents in Fulford and Dawson streets. The cost to the Council would he less now than later 011.
