At the Walthain Orphanage enquiry 10-day evidence was given by Mrs Carpenter, Matron of the Institution, who said she never called the children "bas'airds" because they were not. There was a little difference between the children's food and hers, but no more than she considered she was entitled to as an official. When they went without potatoes it was because they were dear at the time. She admitted having said "darn children" and called them " little devils" in heated moments. The children were very trying at times anil after she luid had a severe illness il was hard to bear with them. The enquiry stands adjourned (ill February 2nd.
