The proceedings, however, lacked enthusiasm. The principal speakers were Sir Normond MacLtturiu and Mr Trirkotl, members of the Legislative Council, John Norton, and Senator Neild.

Resolutions were adopted approving of the resolutions passed in the New South A\ ales Parliament protesting against the treatment of the State by the Federal Parliament in many matters, and which caused serious concern, especially as regards the capital site; and pledging to use ail constitutional means to induce the Federal Parliament to accord New South Wales her just rights. A committee was appointed to carry the resolutions into effect. The speakers entered strong protests against the treatment of the State, but depreciated extreme measures, The population of the Commonwealth at the end of the year was 1,002,893 —New South Wales 1,483,393 Victoria 1,211,098.
