The less e has now taken poslession of t.ie school, anil refuses to quit. Further developments are now awaited with interest. Hawera has been most unfortunate in the matter of lire alarm apparatus. All sorts and conditions of hells have been tried and found wanting. Big towers and little towers on .which to hang the bells have been erected at various times and at considerable cost, but the problem still reminds unsolved, and Hawera's slumbers Viay not yet be disturbed by the ringing of her fire bells At a' meeting of the llawcr Fire Brigade on Wednesday, no les • than nine of the firemen asked to b excused for not attending the fire call on January lith, all complaining thai they had not heard it.
Many people go through life in a semi-apologetic manner : in other words, llicy simply drag out an existence instead of living. As the Government is practically unopposed from Now Plymouth to Gisborne, it ought to run ail up-to-date train service to accommodate the people of Taranaki, Wang.inui, Mauawalu, llawke's Bay, Hush, and Wairarapa districts; and if the; Parliamentary representatives of these const it ufneics are worth their salt, they ought to compel the Railway Department to carry out this crying necessity."
