THE PETROLEUM BORE.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS. Although the past week or so has , witnessed no marked progress in the development of the oil bore, arrangements are being completed for a more vigorous prosecution of the work than ever. The difficulty of shutting off the water having proved insurmountable | with the present casing.cn account of the great heal in Hie lower depllis of the bore melting the india-rubber joints (tho packer) on which rest the bottoms of the casings, and allowing the water through into the oil bearing strata, it has been decided to put in a larger casing. The object is, after explanation, obvious. The new casing, (i inch, will be lowered into the bore, oulside the present five inch casing, until it rests upon solid rock formation. By so doing no gutta-percha packing will be required and the water from the higher levels, it is confidently anticipated, will be effectually excluded from the oil well. Immediately this decision was arrived at, the new easing, a rather expensive item, was ordered, and is due to arrive in Nevt Plymouth next week. No time will bo lost in getting it into position, and within a very short time the value of the field should be receiving the test that for years has eluded the praiseworthy efforts of oilseekers.
