At the Police Court this morning, James Michael Lawsou was charged with committing an aggravated assault upon Louisa Schultz, wife of tho licensee of tlio Grosvenor Hotel on the evening of December 22. It was alleged that accused used insulting language to the daughter of the licensee. He was ordered off, and the alleged assault resulted. Or (roregillou said lie was called to attend Mrs Scliullz between half-past nine and ten o'clock. She was in bed, and was suffering from shock, ardfour central incisiye teeth were missing, the loss baring evidently been recent. She was also bruised and cut about. A number of teeth, which the doctor produced in court, corresponded, he said, to Mrs Schultz's missing ones. Other evidence as to the circumstances of the alleged assault was given. Mr B.mme, for the defence, submitted that although the offence may have been committed, the action of Mrs Schultz had been largely responsible for it, and that it was therefore no ease to go to the Supreme Court. The Bench, however, thought otherwise, and considered that under the circumstances and in justice to society at large, the case should be tried before a jury. The defence was therefore reserved. Bail was fixed in two sureties of £SO each, and accused himself in £IOO.
