STOCK TROUBLES.
INOCriiATrON OP CALVES, r j (By our Southern Reporter.) s Dissatisfaction is rife 011 the Waimale Plains just now over the inoculation of calves as a preventative of blackleg. The inoculation lias been conducted by the Agricultural Department for some lime now. A number of fanners near Miumia . hud their calves put through last week, and have had bad luck with same, many of the animals having since died. A peculiarity of the trouble is that the best, calves are the ones which are affected. The symptoms of the complaint- are first noticeable in the forequarter of the iilVcfted animal, when the beast becomes lame. The foreij .iiirt.er attacked is generally the one into which the serum has been injected. The animal soon mopes about and gets down, and in a couple of hours suc--1 climbs. An hour or two after death the af- [ J.ectcd portion of the animal becomes ■ badly decomposed. This tcuds to show that death is caused by some virulent ) form of blood-poisoning. Stock-Inspector Deem is doing all he 1 can to lind a solution of the 1 and t j this end has secured specimens 1 | ol'the diseased portions of some of the animals, which he lias forwarded to . the Agricultural Department. Farmers in South Taranaki are con--1 sidcrably exercised in niiud regarding the mailer. They seem to have 110 •- i remedy, having simply to grin and bear , ! it.
