AUCKLAND HARBOR COLLISION.

THE NAUTICAL INQUIRY. PKB FBESS ASSOCIATION. ArcKLAND, January 10. Captain Southgato, captain of the Kapanui, said that nlion almost abreast of the Gael, his red light went out. Ho ordered a hoy to re-light it immediately, and ho steered to starboard across the wake of tho Gael, to avoid the Claymore, which was coming end on. He did not whistle because the Claymore whistled apparently once, indicating to lii.it to take the opposite course. If the Claymore's captain said he kept a straight course witness could not contradict him. Me knew by going to starboard that lie would show no light, and expected that the Claymore would understand that the red light had gone out. He himself observed article 25—to keep to starboard—regarding Auckland harbor as 'a narrow ohannel,' but he could not undertake to toll the tales of others who did not. He had only drunk two glasses of liquor in his life. In a former Nautical Court, for collision, he was exonerated.
