A mail mimed John Cook, after being sentenced to one month's imprisonment ut the Magistrate's Court to-day for being an idle and disorderly person, said to tiie Magistrate : " I hope you'll never be able to give another." Mr H. AV. Bishop, S.M., had the mun brought back and increased the sentence to three months. At the same sitting George l'rendergust was clnu'giid with wounding William Williams with intent to do grevious bodily harm. Accused had stabbed Williams with a knife in an hotel bar last Saturday night week. On the application of the police the charge was reduced to common assault. Accused was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment. At the Magistrate's Court to-day John lioss, charged with using a room in Colombo-street as a common gaming. , house, olected to bo tried by jury, and was committed for trial. Bail £'loo, one surety £IOO. 1 Charges against James Eobinson, Charles Isaacs, Henry Hensley, W. Alexander, Frederick Brown, Bernard O'Brien, Edward Bates of being found without lawful excuse in. a common gaming houso, were dismissed, defendants showing that they had lawful excuse. Maurice Hyslop was committed for trial on a charge of assisting in the conduct of a common gaming house 1 .
