The Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland. APPEAL. The disastrous fire that oeeurred at the Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland on Sunday, September 17, will b fresh in the minds of the readers o this paper. This appeal Is intended to make plain the extent of ,the loss, its ef feet upon the present condition o the children, and the urgent necessit for Funds to provide adequately an wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts wher this paper circulates have from tim to time been oared for in the Home ■which has, therefore, a particufar a well aB a general claim upon you sympathies. 1.-THE LOSS, » The two Main Dormitories are ab solutely destroyed, that is, tihe sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. Ia addition, the Matron's Quarters, Staff Diningroom, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom and Hofr pital are totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing and Furniture has been lost What this means to the children an to tho matron and her staff can hardly be conveyed by inere words.
2.-NEW BOILDINGS. The matter of providing New Build ings has been receiving the carefu consideration of tho Board, as ap pears by the last two annual re ports, and a New Buildings Fun has been created. In providing permanent accommod ation, the safety of the children is Consideration of paramount import ance, and this can only be secured t Buildings of Stono or Brick. B.—THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines i roughly estimated at from £SOOO t £7OOO, in addition to which it ma be necessary to purchase land. 4,—THE FINANCIAL POSITION. The income from the Board's Eii dowinents is fully absorbed in main taining the 69 children in the Home The numbers have increased 31st March, 1905, by 28, and for th current year, owing to such increase the Board anticipates a debit balanc of expenditure over receipts. Thi will, of course, be increased by th expenses inevitably upo tho fire. ..To take any considerabl sum from the Capital for buildin purposes would very seriously hamp er the -work of the Home, and preju dice the well-being of the children.
