Parnell, Auckland. APPEAL. The disastrous Are that occurred at the Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland on Sunday, September 17, will b fresh in the minds of the readers o this paper. This appeal is intended to mak« plain tho extent of the loss, its elfeet upon the present condition o the children, and the urgent necessit for Funds to provido adequately an wisely for their future wt-lfare. Children from the districts wher this paper circulates have from tiin to time been oared for in the Home which has, therefore, a particular a well as a general claim upon you sympathies. 1.-TIIE LOSS, Th» two Main Dormitories are ab solutely destroyed, that is, the sleep ing accommodation of over 70 children. In addition, the Matron's Quarters, Staff Diningroom, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom and Hospital are totally destroyed, and, on. sides this, a considerable quantity 01 Clothing and Furniture has been lost What this means to the children an to the matron and her staff can hardly be conveyed by mere words. 2.-NEW BUILDINGS. The matter of providing New Build ings has been receiving tho carefu consideration of the Board, as ap pears by the last two annual re ports, and a New Buildings Fun has been created. In providing permanent accommod ation, the safety of the children is consideration of paramount import ance, and this can only be secured i Buildings of Stone or Brick. Of such Buildings on modern lines i roughly estimated at from £SOOO t £7OOO, in addition to whieh it ma l>e necessary to purchase land. 4.—THE FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho income from the Board's En dowments is fully absorbed in main taining the 89 children in the Home The numbers have increased sir .*a 31st March, 1905, by 28, and for th current year, owing to such increase the Board anticipates a debit balanc of expenditure over receipts. Thi will, of course, be increased by th expenses inevitably attendant upo the fire. ..To take any consideraW sum from the Capital for buildin purposes would very seriously hamp er the work, of the Home, and preju dice the well-being of the children. THE APPEAL OF THE CIIILDUEI For the sake of the good work done in past years, for the sake o tho larger work to be done now an in the years to come, and above all in tho name of Christ, for the sak of His little cues, we appeal for help. The insurance on the Building des troyed is £]2so. Amount available is £2360. Rough estimate of amount stil required for Building is £404 The Home has not received anj Government subsidy for the last twenty years. It has been already stated that th Board had hj»i r un to form a Buildin Fund. Had it proved necessary t mako a Public Appeal, in the future for that fund, the amount asked fo would have been comparitively small NOW THERE IS NO ALTERNA NATIVE : THE APPEAL HA!
