TENDERS FOR BOROUGH WORK.

Abbott, plumbers, Was fead [at the Borough Council on l Thntsday night:—"We, the undersigned, have abstained from tendering for work advertised at Fire Brigade station as * protest against Councillor Ewing retaining hit teat on the Conn«il, as he is very eloselj associated with One of. the firms tendering, if not a ptrttar. With regard to work done on tetytit tank, as ratepayers we think this AanU hare been tendered for, and hot ghvn privately to a firm in which one of your Councillors is 10 much interested."—Ordered to lie on the table. The Mayor stated that there was <n>ly one tender for sanitary work at tfctf fire station. Cr I!wing urged that the same course should be taken as was adopted when Hr Grayling's tender was accepted for the power-house—namely, that if the tender waa within a reasonable amount of the Engineer's estimate it should be aceqited. Some of the Crs. regretted that friction ihonld have arisen, and it was suggested that the work should be retendered for. On the motion of Cr Wilson the tender was opened. Cr Ewing said that Smart Bros, were opt anxious to get work unless in fair knd open tender. It was decided to accept Smart Bros, tender of £64.
