Whence Colors Come. The cochineal insects furnish a great many «f the very fine colors. Among them are the gorgeous carmine, the crimson, scarlet carmine and purple lakes. The cuttlefish gives the sepia. It is the inky fluid which the fish discharges in order to render the water opaque when attacked. Ivory chips produce the ivory black and bone black. The exquisite Prussian blue is made by fusing horse*' hoofs and other refuse animal matter with impure potassium carbonate. Various lakes are derived from roots, barks and gnins. Blue-black comes from the charcoal of the vinestalk. Lamp-black is soot from certain resinous substances. Turkey red is made from the madder plant, which grows in Hindustan. The yellow gap of a tree ofHiam produces gamboge. Raw sienna is the natural earth from tbc neighborhood of Siena, Italy. Raw umber is also an earth found near Umbria and burned.

A Lesson in Civility. As a large black dog was standing near the edge of a dock, he was very much annoyed by the conduct of a small dog, which persisted in snapping at him. The aggrieved animal for a long time bore the indignities with seeming indifference, but at length, losing all patience, he turned upon his tormentor, and spi/.ing him by the back his neck, dropped him into the water. The struggles of the unfortunate animal were 7iewcd with apparent interest by the canine joker, who at last, seeing that the poor thing could hold out no longer, jumped in the water and swam with the small dog to a boat, in which they were both safely landed. The incident exciied much laughter amongst the people who were standing about.

Where it Freezes Every Night. At Alto Crueero, Bolivia, water freezes every night of the yoar, and the thermometer frequently falls many degrees below zero. There are no facilities for artificial heatnot even a fireplace—and people keep themselves warm by pntting on ponchos and other extra wraps. Mr. Grundy, who has charge of the smelter at Maravillas, says that last winter the thermometer frequently fell to 8 degrees below zero in the sitting-room of his residence, but the family felt no discomfort from the lack of stoves and furnaces, and sat around the evening lamp reading just as they are accustomed to do at an ordinary temperature. At noonday the sun is intensely hot, because of the elevation and the rarity of the atmosphere, and blisters the flesh of those who are not accustomed to it. There is a difference of 20 degrees and sometimes 80 degrees in the temperature of the shade and the sunshine. Water will freeze in the shade while, twenty feet away, men may be working in their shirt sleeves. The natives seemed to be entirely inured to oold and go about barefooted and barelegged over the ic« and stones indifferently without regard to temperature ; hut they have a way of heaping the blankets on their heads and wrapping up their faces to keep the pure air out of their throats and nostrils. The women who herd tin* llocks arc often out on the mountain' for weeks at a time without sheU lej or anything to eat except parched coin, strips of dried nmt, and cocoa leaves, which ire the most powerful of

Used In Hospitals For Consumption It is gratifying to note that every year a larger number of consumption hospitals and sanatoria use Angier's Emulsion systematically. What better proof can be given of its value ? For the successful treatment of lung affections two things are necessary—first to heal the lung tissue, and second to improve nutrition. iUigier's Emulsion does both. No other remedy has such a soothing and healing effect upon the entire respiratory mucous membrane, and no other remedy will so invariably promote appetite, aid digestion and improve nutrition. Angier's Emulsion positively has no equal for the treatment of consumption, bronchitis, coughs, and all respiratory inflammations. It is pleasant to take and agrees perfectly with delicate stomachs.
