A WESTERN PARK FOR AUCKLAND.
PEE PIESS ASSOCIATION, At csLAMi, December 20. Victoria Park, the city's newest Sung, was opened to the public to-day by the Mayor. Members of the City Council, and other local bodies were present, and there was a good attendance of the general public. The park was reclaimed by the Harbour Board from Freeman's Bay by the deposit of silt lifted in dredging the harbour, and was leased to the City Council at a rental of £SOO a year. It contains Iti J acres, and its value for building was very largely in excess of I lie amount annually paid by the Council, but the Board leased it at a low rental in order to provide a breathing space and playing ground for the western end of the city. The ground was handed over in its rough state, and it has been levelled and grassed by the Council, a raised bank" being provided all round for spectators at football or cricket matches.
