EDUCATION BOARD.
The ordinary monthly meeting was held on Tuesday night. Present—Mr A. Morton (in the chair), Mrs Dougherty, Messrs Adlam, McDonald, Monkhouse, Fanll. MASUAI, AND TECHNICAL The Chief Inspector presented the following manual and technical education report : Tho sum of £55 16s has been grauted towards furnishing, apparatus, etc.. for the current classes in New Ply. mouth. Application has been made to the department for the sum of £96 for the septic tank and the fencing at Stratford. Classes in New Plymouth and Stratford have closed.. For the classes in N.P. application has been made for capitation as follows -.— Technical classes £2<l 4s 6d, continuation classes £ll 3s 4d, scholarships £S 19s fid, total £l4 7s 4d. I have today made up tlm amounts for the classes in Stratford as follows: Scholarships £l3 1]« 9d; technical' classes £22, continuation classes £]& 7s 7d, total £69 19 dd. The capitation on teachers' classes, amounting to £3O Js fld has been applied for. In response tri communications with the head teachers of the town schools, Mrs Dowling has formed a class for instruction in swimming and life-saving. The class has been started, and will be carried on during the summer holidays, and the number of lessons necessary to obtain the grant will be completed when the school re-opojis. Mr Poland, caretaker' at the baths, is giving thp instruction in swimming, and the local doctors have offered to give lessons on resuscitating ihc apparently drowned. Boys and girls receive instruction and the class is a very popular* one with children and parents, some of theOnltec having offered to attend with the children during the holidays. Attached was a list of the expenditure on manual and technical accounts since last meeting. Mr Faull asked if there Mas any proper supervision of these technical education amounts. Ho believed in tho inspector grabbing everything that was dub, but the paying out. should be advised by (lie Finance Cquiinittec, No reflection was meant to lie cast on the Inspector.. The Chairman said (ho Inspector was most aealous In preserving the interests of the Board in every way, just as much in expending as collecting these funds. Tim chairman (Mr Wade) had personally inspected these accounts before thoy were paid, and the Board had authorised payment of these scheduled arcounts. Mr Faull, as a member of the Finance Committee, had never asked for these accounts to lie presented.
Mr Faull wished to explain that no one could possibly be more zealous than Mr Silencer, the Chief Inspector. The report was adopted.
