NEWSPAPER SUED FOR LIBEL.
NOMINAL DAMAGES. PEC VIIKSsJ ASSOCUTIOX. Auckland, December IN. An action for £1001) damages for alleged libel was brought by Theophilus Wake, Independent candidate for Bay of Islands at the recent, election, against Francis AfcKenzie, proprietor of the Northern Luminary newspaper. The alleged libel consisted of two articles which plaint iff considered injured his reputation and chances as a candidate for Parliament. Publication was admitted, defendant contending that lie thought the articles were privileged, being based on Hansard reports, and he published them in the interests of the electors. The Jury returned a verdict for £1 damages, the question of costs being reserved.
