The disastrous fire that occurred at the Orphan Home, l'arnell, Auckland on Sunday, September 17, will b fresh in Iho minds of the readers o this paper. This appeal is intended to make plain the extent of the loss, its effect upon the present condition of tho childreu, and the urgent uecessit for Funds to provide adequately an wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts wher this paper circulates have from tim to time been cared for in the Home which has, therefore, a particular a well as a general claim upon you sympathies. I.—THE LOSS. Th» two Main Dormitories are ab solutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. In addition, the Matron's Quarters, Staff Diningrooni, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom and Hospital aro totally destroyed, and, be sides this, a considerable quantity oi Clothing and Furniture has been lost What this means to the children an to the matron and her stall can hardly he conveyed by mere words. 2.—NEW BUILDINGS. The matter of providing New liuild ings has been receiving the carefu consideration of the Board, as ap pears by the last two annual re ports, and a New Buildings Fun has been created. In providing permanent uccoinmod ation, the sarety of the children is consideration of paramount import ance. and this can only be secured i Buildings of Stone or Brick. 3.—THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines i roughly estimated at from £.5000 t £7OOO, in addition to which it ma be necessary to purchase land. 4.—THE FINANCIAL POSITION. The income from the Board's En dowments is fully absorbed in main taining the 89 children in the Home The numbers have increased sil 31st March, 1905, by 28, and for th current year, owing to such increase the Board anticipates a debit halunc of expenditure over receipts. Ihi will, of course, lie increased by th exoenses inevitably attendant upo the lire. ..To take any considerab* sum frotn the Capital for buildin purposes would very seriously hamp er the work of the Home, and preju dice the well-being of the childrpn. THE APPEAL OF THE CIIILDREI For the sake of the good work done in past years, for the sake o the larger work to be dor.c now an in the years to come, and above all in the name of Christ, for the sak of His little ones, we appeal for help.
