HEAVY PENALTY. PEE PBBBB ASSOCIATION. Dunedin, December 18. At Port Chalmers to-day, George Francis Moir and Peter Tlioin pleaded guilty to Bhooting a seal at Waitate. Tho two men were in a boat when they saw a seal and at once shot it, without thinking of the consequences. Mr Chamberlain, collector of customs, said the Marino Department had no desire to bo vindictive, as accused adnvtted the offence, but it should hi widly known that seals were protected. The southern coast of the colony at one time teemed with seals, and they might havo become a source of enormous wealth, but they were recklessly killed or driven away. Now, after the Government had carefully preserved seals, hoping they would return to old haunts, no sooner did one show its nose than some would-be sportsman shot it.
Accused were fined the minimum penalty of £25 each. Mr Chamberlain said he would make representations to the Department to reduce the fine.
