The disastrous fire that occurred at the Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland on Sunday, September 17, will b fresh in the minds of the readers o this paper. This appeal is intended to make plain the extent of the loss, its effect upon the present condition of tho children, and the urgent nccessit for Funds to provido adequately an wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts wher this paper circulates have from tim to time been cared for in the Home which has, therefore, a particular a well as a general claim upon you sympathies. Th» two Main Dormitories are ab solutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. In addition, the Matron's Quarters, Staff Diningroom, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom and Hospital are totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity oi Clothing and Furniture has been tost What this means to the children an to the matron and her staff can hardly bu conveyed by mere words. 2.-NEW BUILDINGS. Tho matter of providing New Build ings has been receiving tho carcfu consideration of the Board, as np pears by the last two annual re ports, and a New Buildings Fun has been created. In providing permanent accommod ation, the safety of the children is consideration of paramount import ance. and this can only be secured i Buildings of Stone or Brick. 3.-THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines 1 roughly estimated at from £SOOO t £7OOO, in addition to which it ma be necessary to purchase land. 4.-THE FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho income from the Board's En dowments is fully absorbed in main taining the 89 children in the Home The numbers have ir-creased s».v» . 31st March, 1905, by 28, and for th current year, owing to such increase the Board anticipates a debit balanc of expenditure over receipts. Thi will, of course, be increased by th expenses inevitably attendant upon tho fire. ..To take any considerabl sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hanip er the work of the Home, and preju dice the well-being of the children. THE APPEAL OF THE CIIILDREI For the sake of tbe good work done in past years, for the sake o the larger work to be done now an in the years to come, and above all in the name of Christ, for the sak of His little cnes, we appeal for help. Mr VI. C U Jocltman, Fort Street. Aueklnnd ir at tho office o' this pnp^r. The New Building Fund Accoun now stands -.it £lllO. The insurance on the Building des troyed is £1250. Amount available is £231)0. Rough estimate of amount still required for Building is £'l(ilo|' The Home has not received any Government subsidy for the last twenty years. It has been already stated that th Board had bngun to form a Buildin Fund. Had it proved necessary t roako a Public Appeal, in the future for that fund, the amount nsked fo would have been cornparitively small NOW THERE IS NO A ITERS'A NATIVE: THE APPEAL HAf TO GO FORTH TO-DAY FOR £SOO.
