The disastrous fire that occurred at the Orphan Home, I'ornell, Auckland on Sunday, September 17, will b fresh in Ihe minds of the readers o this paper. This appeal is intended to make plain the extent of the loss, its effect upon the present condition of the children, and the urgent necessit for Funds to provide adequately an wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts wher this paper circulates have from tim to time been cared for in the Home which has, therefore, a particular a well as a general claim upon you sympathies. I.—THE LOSS. The two Main Dormitories are ab solutely destroyed, that is, the sleep ing accommodation of over 70 children. In addition, the Matron's Quarters, Staff Kningroom, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom and Hospital are totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity oi Clothing and Furniture has been lost What this means to the children an to the matron and her staff can hardly be conveyed by mcJC words. 2.—NEW BUILDINGS.
Tho matter of providing New Build ings has been receiving tho carefu consideration of the Hoard, as ap pears by tho last two annual rc ports, and a New Buildings Fun has been created. In providing permanent accon/nod ation, the safety of the children is consideration of paramount import ance, and this can only be secured i Buildings of Stono or Brick. 3.-TIIE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines 1 roughly estimated at from £SOOO t £7OOO, in addition to which it ma be necessary to purchase land. 4.—THE FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho income from the Hoard's En dowinents is fully absorbed in main laining tho 8U children in the Home The numbers have increased 31st March, 1005, by 28, and for th current year, owing to such increase the Board anticipates a debit balanc of expenditure over receipts. Thi will, of course, be increased by th expenses inevitably attendant upon tho fire. ..To take any considerabl Bum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hamp er the work, of the Home, ami preju dice the well-being oi the children. THE APPEAL OF THE CIIILDIIEI For the sake of the good work done in past years, for the sake o tho larger work to be done now an in the years lo come, and above all in the name of Christ, for the sak of His little cues, we appeal for help.
