TARANAKI LICENSING COMMITTEE.

The quarterly meeting of the Taranaki Licensing Committee was held yesterday morning in the New I'lymouth Courthouse. Mr T. Hutchison, S.M., chairman of the committee, presided, tlic other members present being Messrs H. Ambury, D. B Try, J. S. McKcllar ami W. L. Newman. Sergeant Huddrell, inspector of licensed premises, reported favourably upon all the hotels in the district with tlie exception of the Taranaki Hotel, New Plymouth. He commented unfavourably upon these premises, | especially in regard to serving Maoris with liquor. Mr Quiiliwi appeared for Mr 11. J. Julian, the licensee of these premises. Serjeant Haddrell called as witnesses Constables Woods and ISuttimore, besides giving evidence himself. The evidence add.luced was to the effect that Maoris under the influence of drink frequented the premises and a vacant block of land opposite. Maori women also being about the back premises and the lanes adjacent to the hotel, evidently with a view to being supplied with liquor-

ln cross-exau-'nation the witnesses gave date ami details of offences. Mr Quilliam called R. W. Dixon, who conducted a business opposite the hotel and was in a position to see what went on. His opinion was that the hotel was very fairly conducted as far as he could see, and Mr Julian was a lit and proper man to run the business. Mr Quilliain addressed himself to the Bench. Owing to the hotel being situated opposite to the natives' camping ground it was much frequented by the Maoris, but the licensee had honestly endeavoured to control the trade. The licensee could not be held responsible for whit outsiders did, and certainly was not aware that na!ive women received liquor sold from his hotel.

After a short retirement the CJuiirmau warned the licensee to exorcise closer supervision in regard to this Maori trade, and to see that no liquor was taken off the premises for consumption by native women. This was the on 1 v business.
