The Daily News. THURSDAY, DECEMBER 7. THE ELECTION RESULT.

Tjis two 'ciding cries which have resounded throughout the colony for some weeks past havo b>.en ;i Sw!lioiiistn" and " Ma:-se\ i.S'll." An) ;nd the policy of tliesn political le..dcis has ee.,t,lid the election battle, the issue being a lo: conclusion. That tie Government would receive * fresh mandate fiom the people to carry out their progressive legislation was a matter of certainty, but few anticipated ih:it tl:e mandate would have been so emphatic ns it was. Kxiraordinary efforts were put forth by the Opposition to undermine the Government's pooi tion, but apparently their efforts have had no etl'ect on the bulk of the people except to draw attention to the merits of the policy identified with the Premier. It is the outcome of that [H>licy which has caused the gratitude of the people to be exhibited in their votes. The Opposition exercise a useful function in politics, and provided they strive for the wellbeing of the people instead of for [>ersonal ends they do good work In this connection it is to be legretted, from a colonial standpoint, that such "breaks" as Sir William Russell, Messrs Buchanan and John Duthie should have been retired. They have rendered good and faithful service to the country, even though they have not Ix-en identified with the progressive party, and their absen e in Parliament will be deplored as much by Government t-.upjiorters as by adherents of their own jmty. A noti. cafcle feature in the election i< the defeat by such siibstanti il majorities of Mr T. K. Taylor, for Uhristcluurh North, ami Mr 11. D. Bedford, for Dune lin North. Both were the shining lights of the "New Libend Pa:tv," which seems to have re vive I its Unip'w, Messrs Lu e sin aid Fisher being the only survivors. The defeat of Messrs Taylor and liedford is no doubt due in a large degiee lo the personal methods they have adopted, and to their wanton attacks on the Premier and members of his family. Tn three out of tie four seats the Government candi. dates have increased the majorities they received on the la>t occasion.
