| WAITARA MEETING. Tlic Waitara Hack Racing Club's annual meeting took place yesterday at Senary Hill. The weather was threatening, but there was only a slight shower in the afternoon. The attendance was well up to the average. Speculation was brisk, £3069 being machined, as against £2708 last year. Mr R. H. Pigolt gave every satisfaction as judge, the starting being in the hands ot Mr F. Waison. With the exception of the Clifton Stakes, the Holds were despatched in good style. In this event, however, an unfortunate blunder occurred, When Mr Waison pulled tbe lever, only half the barrier, rose. Confide, Koioii', White Star, and two othors shot away, the rest of the field remaining at the barrier, under the impression that it was a false start. Confide, While Star, Mtd Roloiti went on and completed -the course, finishing in that order, The general impression was that it was no race, and even the Clerk of the Course rode down the straight and endeavoured to get the trio to pull up. Cochrane, on Botoitii acting on this advice, eased his mount up, allowing White Star 'o pass him# As events subsequently turned out this was hard luck for Rotoiti's connections and supporters, who i-hus lost second stake money [and dividend. On the starter coming back to the enclosure the stewards were summoned, and after a short conference the three numbers were hoisted and it was declared a race. This decision caused a hostile demonstration among the public, who appeared to be unaminous in clamouring for thi race to bo run over again. It is only fair lo the starter to add that the w chine in use was an obselete piece ( mechanism. In the following raec, ..c Welter, the machine again proved defective, the field eventually 1 getting away with the tapes tangled all round the horses ayd riders, but, for. ' tunatcly, all managed to clear them. ' solves, though il'e mishap affected the chancos of some of the runners. The [ last two events were despatched by , means of a flag. After yesterday's ' Pr.sco, it behoves the officials of the club to seo ihnt a complete and up-to« ' date Bla ting machine is in use for next meeting. The track was in splendid condition.
