Telephone 148 P.O. Box 19. The Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland. APPEAL. "Hie disastrous fire that oMnrred at the Orphan Home, rarnell, Auckland, on Sunday, September 17, will be fresh in the minds «f the readers ol this paper. This appeal is intended t« make plain the extent of th* loss, its effect upon the present condition of the children, and the urgent necessity for Funds to provido adequately and wisely for their future welfare.
Children from the districts where this paper circulates hare from time to time been cared for in the Home, which has, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon your sympathies. 1.-TIIE LOSS. Tht. two Main Dormitories are absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. in addition, the Quarters, Stnflf Wningroom, Sew JEg room, Seamstress' lk-drown and Hospital are totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity 01 Clothing and Furniture has lieen lost. What this means to the children and to tlic matron and her stall can hardly be conveyed by lad e words. 2.—NEW ULILDtt'GS,
The matter of providing New Build itigs has been receiving the carefi.l: consideration of the Board, as ftp priiifi by iho lost two annual re j ports, fii<d a New Buildings Fund h&B been created. I In providing permanent accominodntion, the safety of the children is a consideration of paramount import | once, and this can only be secured in Buildings of Stone or Brick. B.—THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines is roughly estimated at from £f)OuO t £70(0, in addition to which it ma I* necessary to purchase land. 4.—THE FINANCIAL POSITION. The income from tht Board's En inwinents in fully absorbed in main taining the 89 children iu the Home The numbers have increased n't .4 31»t Mnrtrh, 1905, by 28, and for tha current year, owing to such increase,| the Hoard anticipates a debit balance of expenditure over receipts. This' will, of course, be increased by tha expenses inevitably attendant upon] the (ire. .To take any considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously h&mp* er the work of the Home, and prejudice the well-being of the children. The New Building Fund Account now stands at £lllO. The insurance on the Building destroyed is £1230. Amount available is £2360. Rough estimate of amount still required for Building is £4640 The Home has not received any Government subsidy for the last twenty years.
It has been already staled that th noaul had begun to form a Iluildin Fund. Had it proved necessary t make a Public Appeal, in the future for that fund, the amount nsked fur would have been coniparitively sinallv SOW THEItE IS NO ALTERXA NATIVE : THE AIT'EAI, HAS TO CO FORTH TO DAY FOR AT LEAST £ ; - )0()> THE AI'L'EAL OF TIIE CHILDREN For the snke of the good irork done in past yours, lor the sake o tho larger r,ork to be dor.c now on in the years to come, and above all in tho name of Christ, for the -sak of His little cues, we appeal for help.
