The Orphan Home, Papnelli Auckland. APPEAL. The disastrous fire that occurred at the Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland, on Sunday, September 17, will b« fresh In the minds of the readarg of this paper. This appeal Is intended to make plain the extent of the loss, its effect upon the present condition ol the children, and the urgent necessity (or Funds to provide adequately and wisely for their future wolf are. Children from the districts where this paper circulates have from time to timo been cared for in the Home, which has, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon your sympathies. i.—The loss. The two Main Dormitories are absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. In addition, the Matron'* Quarters, Staff ]>iningroom, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom nnd Hospital are totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing and Furniture has been lost. What this means to the children and to the matron and her staff can hardly be conveyed by mere words.
2.—NEW BUILDINGS. The matfei of providing New Build ings has been receiving the careful consideration of tlio Hoard, as ap I pears by the last two annual re ! ports, and a New Buildings Fund has been created. I In providing permanent uccommod-' at ion, the safety 01 the children is a consideration of paramount import ancc. and this can only be secured in Buildings of Stone or Brick. 3.—THE COST. Of such Buildings on modern lines Is roughly estimated at from £SOOO to £7OOO, in addition to which it may be necessary to purchase land. 4.—THE FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho income from the Board's Endowments is fully absorbed in maintaining the 89 vhildren in the Home, The numbers have increased s> —* 31st March, 1905, by 28, and for tho current year, owing to such increase, tho Board anticipates a debit balance of expenditure over receipts. This will, of course, be increased by tho expenses inevitably attendant upon the fire. ..To take any considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hamper the work, of the Home, and prejudice the well-being of the children.
The New Building Fund Account now stcnds at £lllO. Tho insurance on the Building destroyed is £l2jo. Amount available is £2300. Hough estimate of amount still required for Buildicg is £4640 The Home has not received any Government subsidy for the last twenty years. It has been already stated that th lloaid had begun to fonn a Buildin Fund. Had it proved necessary t mako a Tublic Appeal, in the future for that fund, the amount asked for would havo been comparitively small, NOW THERE IS NO ALTBJINAi NATIVE : TnE APPEAL HAS TO GO FORTH TO-DAY FOR AT LEAST £ S Q O< TIIE APPEAL OF THE CHILDREN, For the sako of the good workj done in past years, for the sake of' tho larger work to be done now and in the years to come, and above all, in tho name of Christ, for the sake of His little cnes, we appeal for help. CHARLES AI. NELSON', Chairman. W. E. GI-LLAM, Vice-Chairman. Win. Colder. A. Littler. 3eo. Mac Murray. T. Charter. G. A. Carver. W. W. Hill. O. 1). Ashton, H. H. Morrow. A. V. Macdonakl. Robert Walker. Wm. JefTery. F. Thos. Ward Carlton Hay. C. J. TUNKS. Hon. Treasurer. I confidently rommend this apper.l io the clinritable consideration of those who care for Christ's littl mes. I am assured that the Orphan *lome Board will tnko nil wants in to consider,'iti< nin their plans fo tho future. M. R. ATJCKLANP. Bishopseourt, Heptember 22, 1005. NOTE.—Subscriptions rill he glad ly received by a»iy member of tho Board or by the Secretary, Mr W. G ? Jackman, Fort Street, Auckland, |r at tho office of this papsr.
