Taranaki Agricultural Show.
■■o THE PEOPLE'S DAY. Fortunately the .second and popular | day of the show was favoured with brighter weather than on Wednesday, the consequence being that there was a record attendance, the trains from the south i eiug well filled. At a rough estimate we should say that there i were about 1000 people on the ground. | all of whom could view the contests | comfortably, thanks to the arrangements in vogue this year. It is only just to all the oiHcials, from the President to the Secretary, to accord them well merited praise for the pains they have taken over the arrangements and for the ei:eigy displayed in ejecting considerable improvements over previous years shows. That it pays to do sottas abundantly proved by the large crowd attracted to the ground, and it is to be hoped that the will feel encouraged by this mark ot appreciation on tiie part of the public, to pursue its progressive policy. Tne chief alt. act ion on Thursday was centred in the ring, where the ridirg and driving contests took place. It was aiound this large enclosure that the people were ranged, each event being followed with great interest. The lady rulers looked verybusinesrdike in their divided skirts, and proved how gniceiully they can ride w\\ cavalier. The gr ud pArade of cattle and hor.-es was an imposing spectacle, and was watched with keen interest by tht
spectators. After this the ruling and (hiving commenwl. The most intei - osting event was tliat for tlie best lady rider. The contest for premier honours was soon seen to lay between Miss Maggie Briggs and Miss Camp bull, and the of deriding their re .-furtive merits as riders evidently afforded the judge much more ditlieidty ill.in usual. To solve the problem the judges awarded both ladies a iirst [iiize, a derision which was greeted with loud applause and eheeis. hi the leaping contest these ladies carried all before them, and cortainly appeared to greater advantage in the saddle than i.he male ridel's. There is little lo comment upon in connection wiih lhe various events, file judging iiy Messis tollies and Cameron giving entire satisl'at-lion. We must not omit to mention that, in the jumping i-vnits the horses talcing part were as a >vhole ol considerable meiit and a distinct advance as lCgards quality on ilio.secompeting in previous years. Alogetlier thes'iow \rasa most pronoun ■ed mic 'ess, and those who had woikei .-o hard in the interests of the Socie.u dioiild feel compen.-atcd for tlieii irouble by the excellent result of ihei' labours. To the Seeretury, Mr E. J' Webster, especially is due a large meas ure of praise. His untiring eil'orts foi montlis past liave been directed zealous ly towards infusing new life into tin Society, and we are pleased tocongra! ulatj him on his success.

'l'll.- exhibition oi" butlcr was in every way worthy rf the district, anil this is saya good 'deal. When il is slated I hat thr leading .actories were represent ed it will be easily nndersteod that the quality ol the exhibits left nothing to bo desired. Added to Ibis, live Chief Dairy Commissioner, J Mi* Ivinsella, expressed tbo opinion that the quality (if (lie butter sen( in by tire successful fact i>ry, J lie jMaketaua. was et|ual io the best i>auish, whilv the olli'«r pri/e winners were very IHtle below. It will tbu-c he seen that Taranaki butter-makers are straining every nerve to lop the market. There is lit) question thai Mr Kinsella's remarks were justified, and that the Maketawa, the Ilillshoro', Hell Mloek. Tikorangi. Crown hairy, and Mangorei factories are well main!aining and improving tile reputation of the district for the best butter. The Milbtboro' factory is specially deserving of commendation. Tlit* compel ition fur the best .design in 'ancy butler was net- large, but il produced sirme ingenious devices. sotiH* of whieh. though evidently the subject of murb painstaking and m* t ist ic treal men I. failed to secure recognition. The awards in this class were (horoughly justilied.
IiACON.' The Jiiglewood M;n:on Coinpan.v had no competitor, but their display was of stdlicienl merit to have carried high honours against otner factories if they had exhibited. The manager is to be congratulated on ihe exhibit. which was in every way a grefti cmiit'-.Jo him and the district. mittkumAkim: dkmoxstmaTIOK'. The announcement I hat Missßrean. ol the Dairy Department, would give practical denionst nit ions of handmade.butter nianufa'Mlire caused much satisfaction amongst those interested in this work. At each of the diinonsi rgt ions < n Thursday llicre was a large musMr-r o' alteiitivi' spectaloi's, who followed the process aivi the exjuri's comments Uw', liveliest attention. ' Cnfort .the arrangvnuTits ft r the public'th'erirnol co,.duei\e to all benelitiiig by 'tiie lecture as only those in the front could J either see or hear. 1 iOMSFS. Apart from the of hackney and coaching classes. the draughts were a most creditable porlo ii of the show. Mr Miemer's pair being except-ionaJly good specimens, though deem'td too heavy for plougiv•ng'.t but on*: this point opinions ma\ dilTer. The ponies were alsr a gooil class, and mostly in capital condition CATTLF. There can -be no question a« to cattle taking ihe pride of place anmng other exhibits this \eitr, and we are pleased to record the general satisfaction expressed at the exceptionally line muster in this class, both from our own and from other districts. Winks' KsfaD* amir J. If. Sellers sent some choice specimen*, which carried off several prizes in Shorthorns A.\rshires made m spleirdM shyrfw, Ols.n's Estate and IL I'\ Cornwall being well represented. In Jerseys and llolstvins 1 here were some very tine specimens, aird tlie judging must, have been nd Ught task. There were also some very good fat cattle.
SHFKP. •The entries 'of sheep wen; remarkable lor tive excellence i f t-h<* evhibils Mr -J. R. Cnrrig'an had sent up a very fino collection ol Leicestvrs, Shropshire*. . and crossbreds, while Western Mros. liad exhibited some good Leicesters. F,. Short was the only exhibitor ot llomneys, and they were a credit to Jriui.
PIGS. Tliif; class showed improvement o(i previous tears, there, being a 'greater variety and more entries, MKXiK. This class calls for little comment, th,Me being only one or two entries n eaih section, and it. is doubtful whether the class .serves any useful purpose.
