Taranaki Horticultural Society.
HIRING -SHOW. j The spring show of the above society : held ut the liiil Ila'l on Thursday was well attended. The endeavours of the j energetic ladies' and general committee were well rewarded by the appreciation shown by the visitors of the completeness of the arrangements. Mr (lilnionr, the indefatigable secretary, if deserving of great praise for the Matmiii' in which lie earned out his arduous duties. The interior of the hall never looked more pleasing than on this occassion, with the tastefully arranged tables containing (.he exhibits. Everything showed that skill and j atienee had been bijught to bjar for the [impose of attaining a degree 0' ix eellence unprecedented"" in the history of the society. The section for pot plants was a most complete one, there being one hundred exhibits, all of which weie lner.tjrious. The varieties of palms wen: particularly good. There was a large entry of cut flowers, the vaiiety being splendid. The most notable weie the selection of roses which were truly exquisite and elaimod a good deal of attention. The Lou<piets and lloml designs were entered largely in their class, and some beautiful articles were exhibited. The flower stands, the decorated mantles, and the ladies' sprays and bompiets were most attractive, as indeed were the whole of the exhibits in. this class. A beautiful design representing the •' ltoek of Ages," dressed with sea weed, etc., exhibited by Miss Cattley, was the cause of a great deal of admiration. The children's classes were but poorly represented, although the flowers arranged by the boys and girls showed considerable merit. The fruit classes were also poor, but these were made up for by the abundance ot excellent vegetables that were on view. Very tempting 1 weie the exhibits in the cookery class•s, which weie the most complete in the exhibits. The cliiss for homemade preserves, too, was fairly well represented. The miscellaneous class was not as large as couhl lie wished for, although some of the articles entered by the children were distinctly good. The collection of wild Ibwcrs was said to be the finest evtx exhibited in New Ply.uouth. An interesting exhibit was shown by Mr 0. Moveiley, the wellknown wood-carver, in the shape of :i .:cnr ! showing the various stages of leating ornamental work.
Tee m:imics were iv)ii'csenled 1>) "lie JI irshe.i'l Nu sery Company, Messers Liinl Si Sous au l Missrs Weiglitnen it Sins. The Morslieail t.'oni-'-illi\'.s uxliiliits werechielly pot plniils, which were in gi-cat variety. Messiv Laiid it Sons, of WiUigamii, slioweil a .superb collection of roses, consisting ol over 10J varieties, including many handsome novelties of this year's, sncli as the Lady Huberts, D)'. Campbell Hall, Mrs Conway Junes, Madame E. Mitz, Lc Pi-ogross and Laly Waterloo, besides many vory jiretty briars. lMessrs Weiglitman it Sons also exhibited a profusion of loses, which were very much admired. What was said to be one of the handsomest exhibits iu the room was that of the City Fruit and Flower Co., who showed some delightfully pretty rboiodendions, iris, ca - tii, and azalea, and idso a vai iety ol novelties in vegetables. Mr Black-, ol New Plymouth, was tho exhibitor of an assortine.it of 120 dill'erent pansies, forming an ensemble that was admired ftyal.
