The Orphan Home, Parnell, Auckland. APPEAL.

I RPHS £2 SI 41 diSastrou s fire that occurred at tile Orphan Home, Par noli, Auckland on Sunday, September 17, will be fresh in tho minds of the readers of this paper. This appeal is intended to make plain the extent of the loss, its effect upon the present conditicn of tho children, and the urgent necessity for 1' unds to provide adequately and wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts where this paper circulates have from time to time been caied for in the Home, which has, therefore, a particular as Well as a general claim upon your sympathies.

I.—TIIE LOSS. 'iht. two Main Dormitories are absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation, of over 70 children. In addition) the Matron's Quarters, Stall ]>iningroom, Sewing room, Seamstress' Bedroom ftivd Hospital are totally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity oi Clothing and Furniture has been lost. What this means to tile children ami to the matron and her stall can hardly be conveyed by ine/e words. 2.—NEW BUILDINGS.

Tliu matter of providing New Buildings luis lieen receiving the careful consideration of Uio Hoard, as appears by tho last two annual reports, -and a Now Buildings Fund has been created. In providing permanent accommodation, the safety of the children is a consideration of paramount importance, and this can only be secured iu Buildings of Stone or Brick. . 3.-TIIE COST. Of such Buildings 011 modern lines is roughly estimated at from £SOOO to £7OOO, in addition to which it may.

bo necessary to purchase land. 4.—'THIS VINANCXAL POSITION. Tlui income from tile Hoard's Endowments is fully absorbed in mainlining tho B<J children in (.lie Home. The numbers have increased sif,o« •51st Jlnrch, 1!)05, by 28, and for the current year, owing to such increase, 1 the Hoard anticipates a debit balance of expenditure over receipts. This will, ot course, be increased by tile expenses inevitably attendant upon tile lire. .To take any considerable sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously hamper the work of the Home, and prejudice the well-being of tile children.

Tho New liuilding Fund Account now slaiwls ut £lllO. The insurance on tile liuilding destroyed is £1250. Amount available is £23(50. Rough estimate ot amount still required for Uuilding is £4640 The Homo has not received any Government subsidy for tho last twenty years. It has been already slated that the Boai d had to form a Huilding Fund. Had it proved necessary to inako a Public Appeal, in the future, for that fund, the amount asked for would have been comparitively small NOW THERE IS NO ALTERNA- • NATIVE : THE APPEAL lIAS TO GO FORTH TO-DAY FOR

AT LEAST . 500()<
