The disastrous fire that occurred ai the Orphan Iloino, Paruell, Auckland on Sunday, September 17, will bi fresh in tho minds of the readers o this paper. This appeal is intended to.mak< plain tho extent of the loss, its ef feet upon the present condition o, tho children, and the urgent necessity for Funds to provido adequately ant wisely for their future welfare. Children from the districts wher< this paper circulates have from tinu lo time been caied lor in the Home which has, therefore, a particular as well as a general claim upon yom sympathies, 1.-TIJE LOSS. The two Alain Dormitories arc absolutely destroyed, that is, the sleeping accommodation of over 70 children. in addition, the Matron's Quarters, Stall J>iningroom, Sowing room, Seamstress' Bedroom and Hospital arc tot-ally destroyed, and, besides this, a considerable quantity of Clothing and Furniture has been lost. What this means to the children and to the matron and her stall can hardly be conveyed by ine/e words. 2.-NEW BUILDINGS. Tho matter of providing New Buildings has been receiving the careful consideration of the Board, as appears by the last two annual porls, -ami a New Buildings Fund has been created. In providing permanent accommodation, the safety of the children is a consideration of paramount importance, and this can only be secured ir Buildings of Stone or Brick. 3.—THE v COST. Of such Buildings on modem lines i* roughly estimated at from £SOOO t( £7OCU, in addition to which it mai be necessary to purchase land. 4.—T1110 FINANCIAL POSITION. Tho income from the Board's En dowments is fully absorbed in main f dining tho S\) children in the Home The numbers have increased sinet 31st March, IJJOS, by 28, and for th current year, owing to such increase the Board anticipates a debit baUmc of expenditure over receipts. Thi; will, of course, be increased by tli expenses inevitably attendant upoi tho fire. .To take any considcrabl sum from the Capital for building purposes would very seriously Ivamp cr the work of the Home, and preju dico the well-being of the children. The New Building Fund Accoun now stands at £lllO. The insurance on the. Building des troyed is £3 250. Amount available is £23fio. Bough estimnto of amount stil required for Building is £4GK The Home has not received am Government subsidy for the las twenty years. It has been already stated that tin Bonid had bngun to form a Building Fund. Had it proved necessary t< mako a Public Appeal, in the future for that fund, the amount asked fo] would have been comparatively small NOW THEIiE IS NO ALTERNA NATIVE: THE APPEAL lIAJ TO GO FORTH TO-BAY FOB JSOOO.
