A LETTER-CARRIER'S BRAVERY.
THREE LIVES SAVED, (l'cr Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCIi, Nov. 6. Hie secretary of tile Royal Humane Society lias received an application for recognition of a brave act performed by Evan 0., MclUierts at Hay uf l'lcnty on March 23 ol this year. Mcßoberts, who is a letter carrier, was out boating on the coast between MaungalaPu and Matapihi with an* other young man named Spooner and two young ladies. The boat upset, and the occupants found themselves struggling in twenty feet of water. Mcßoberts was the only one of the parly who cou'd swim, and after liis three companions had gained bold of the boat, lie set out for the shore, three-quarters of a mile away. He,' however, failed to get any assistance, ami thin commenced a long swim of a mile across an arm of sea in further search for aid. Eventually, li'r was pickid up by a man named Ohappcl, and a Maori, and the three rowed towards the 'scene of the accident, where lliey found the two young ladks and young Spooncr in the last stages of exhaustion.
